I guess it's pretty rare to see a programmer (and aspiring mathematician) write a fictional novel... but here I am. I'm one of the co-authors on the new historical fiction book, Shine a Light on Me: A Story of the Blues, Friendship, and Memory (2026).

After learning about Convict Leasing in school, I was baffled as to why any government would sanction such a horrendous practice. I knew that knowledge of this systematic abuse must be spread, yet I did not have the means to do so. Thus, I joined this project to broaden my research on Convict Leasing, explore the relationships between different histories and cultures, and finally, spread awareness of these concepts in a more accessible format than ever before. In the process, I have constantly marveled at and enjoyed exploring how deeply connected the culture and history is, right here in Sugar Land. It is my hope that you can all relate to the characters and their stories of growing up, enjoy reading the book, and be inspired by the artifacts of the past in their own communities.

Working on this was a lot of research, and I've learnt so much about Sugar Land's local history and its connection to music and the present in the process. Hope you enjoy it! I first-drafted around 2-3 major scenes, amounting to just around 1/5th of the final book.
Putting multiple author's voices together was a major challenge in this, so a HUGE THANKS to Capt. John (John Torgersen) for helping out with it big time!!! None of us have ever written before, yet he still gave really good guidance on writing through research. We all meticulously tweaked every single word in the editing process, but his overarching guidance and insistence on consistency really made this a polished product.
(I'm listed as John Zhou. This is going to be my "public" name for awhile now.)
